Founded on April 30, 1912, América-MG was the first dominant force in the state of Minas Gerais: it won ten consecutive titles of the Mineiro Championship between 1916 to 1925. Its classic rival is Atlético, a match that was known until the 1950s as The Classic of the Crowds. Its stadium, Raimundo Sampaio (better known as Independência), is the second most important playing field in Belo Horizonte, only after Mineirão.
